Yungas and Chaco Foodways

Regional

YUNGAS: the steep humid slopes dropping from the Altiplano into the Amazon, growing coffee, citrus, banana and COCA — a traditional Andean stimulant and ritual plant chewed and brewed for millennia, legal in Bolivia, and ⚠ not to be conflated with cocaine, which is an industrial derivative. The Yungas also hold the AFRO-BOLIVIAN communities of Nor Yungas and Sud Yungas, descended from people enslaved and taken to the Potosí mines. CHACO: dry thorn forest in the south-east, GUARANÍ territory, with cattle, goats, maize, peanuts and gathered forest foods.
