Chapel, Religion and Welsh Food

Religious

NONCONFORMITY โ€” Methodist, Baptist, Independent โ€” was the dominant religious form in industrial and rural Wales from the eighteenth century, and its food institutions are real: the chapel tea, the Sunday school trip, the funeral tea, the cymanfa ganu, and a temperance culture that shaped what was drunk and when. Also the Church in Wales, disestablished in 1920; Catholic communities largely of Irish and Italian descent; and Jewish communities in Cardiff, Swansea and the Valleys towns.
