Rusyn Highland Agriculture

Agricultural region

Farming on slopes, thin soil and a short season: rye and oats rather than wheat, barley, later maize on the warm lowland only, potatoes from the early 19th century, cabbage, beans, beets and turnips, flax, hay from mown meadows, and a household economy in which the pig, the cow and the garden mattered more than the field.
