Moldova, Moldavia, Bessarabia — a note

Historical period

⚠ A WARNING ROW. (1) REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA: a state since 1991, between the Prut and the Dniester plus a strip beyond it. (2) PRINCIPALITY OF MOLDAVIA: c. 1346-1859, covering eastern Romania, today’s Moldova and southern parts of what is now Ukraine — a different shape entirely. (3) MOLDAVIA REGION OF ROMANIA: Iaşi, Suceava, Bacău, Vaslui, Galaţi, Neamţ, Botoşani, Vrancea — Romanian, and its food is Romanian regional food. (4) BESSARABIA: the imperial governorate from 1812, which INCLUDED the Budjak now in Ukraine and EXCLUDED the left bank of the Dniester. A source’s own term is kept with its date; none of the four is rewritten into another.
