Midsummer: fires, herbs gathered at their strongest, early berries, dairy, bread and communal eating by the water. โ MUCH OF THE MODERN FESTIVAL IS A REVIVAL. Nineteenth-century ethnography records the practices; the present-day staged version is twentieth-century and later, and the two are not the same thing.

What is recorded
Nineteenth-century ethnography documents Kupalle practices; the present-day public festival is substantially a twentieth-century and post-Soviet revival. Documented historical practice and modern reconstruction are kept apart.documented
