Cofán, Siona, Secoya, Sapara and Shiwiar Foodways

Indigenous

The smaller Amazonian nationalities, several of them very small indeed. The A’I COFÁN and the SIONA and SECOYA (Siekopai) of Sucumbíos, on the Aguarico and Putumayo, whose territory took the direct impact of oil extraction from the 1960s — the Texaco/Chevron contamination case concerns their rivers and therefore their fish. The SAPARA of Pastaza, whose language and oral heritage are on the UNESCO list of intangible heritage in urgent need of safeguarding and whose speakers number very few. The SHIWIAR and ANDOA, also of Pastaza. ⚠ RECORDED AS EXISTING, WITH THEIR ECOLOGY; specific ceremonial and medicinal knowledge is not.
