Polonyna — the High Pasture

The summer grazing meadows above the treeline and the dairying done on them: flocks driven up in spring, milked and made into cheese at the shepherds’ huts through the season, and brought down in autumn. The polonyna is the single most important landscape unit in Carpathian Rusyn food production and it has its own vocabulary, calendar and rituals.
