Toronto
City
โ AROUND HALF THE POPULATION WAS BORN OUTSIDE CANADA, which is the single most important fact about how the city eats. Kensington Market, Chinatown, Little Italy, Little India on Gerrard, Little Portugal, Greektown on the Danforth, Koreatown, Little Jamaica on Eglinton West, the Somali and Ethiopian restaurants, the enormous Filipino, Sri Lankan, Iranian and Caribbean populations of Scarborough and North York. What the city itself has produced: the JAMAICAN PATTY, which is Toronto food now and which survived a 1985 federal attempt to stop it being called a patty; the roti shop; peameal bacon; and a restaurant culture in which the strip-mall suburbs, not downtown, hold the best of it.
