Basque Whaling and Cod History

Historical period

From the eleventh century Basque crews hunted right whales in the Bay of Biscay, and by the sixteenth were whaling and salting cod at Red Bay in Labrador โ€” archaeologically documented. It is the origin of the salt-cod trade that made bakailao central to a coast that has no cod of its own. โš  Recorded as history; whaling is not presented as a living foodway.
