⚠ MALBEC IS FRENCH. It is a Cahors and Bordeaux variety, brought to Mendoza by the French agronomist Michel Aimé Pouget in 1853 at the invitation of the provincial government. It then largely collapsed in France after phylloxera and frost — the catastrophic Cahors frost of 1956 above all — while thriving in Mendoza’s high, dry, sunny conditions, where it produces something quite unlike its French form. ⚠ SO: FRENCH IN ORIGIN, ARGENTINE IN DEVELOPMENT, and both halves of that are recorded. Argentine Malbec World Day is 17 April, marking Pouget’s 1853 project.
