Venezuelan Coffee

Café

Agricultural region

⚠ VENEZUELA WAS ONCE A MAJOR COFFEE EXPORTER AND IS NO LONGER. Coffee from the Andes — Táchira, Mérida, Trujillo — and from Lara and Portuguesa, was the country’s principal export before oil, and production has since fallen so far that Venezuela imports coffee. What survives is the drinking culture, which is elaborate and specific: GUAYOYO (weak black), NEGRITO (small and black), MARRÓN (with milk, and marrón claro or oscuro depending on proportion), CORTADITO, TETERO (mostly milk). Ordered at a panadería counter by name, and the vocabulary is national.
