Surinamese Diaspora Foodways

Diaspora

⚠ A DIASPORA COMPARABLE IN SIZE TO THE HOME POPULATION, and almost all of it in ONE COUNTRY. Large-scale migration to the NETHERLANDS around independence in 1975 and the years either side means roughly as many people of Surinamese origin live in the Netherlands as in Suriname. The food went with them and became Dutch: the ROTI SHOP and the TOKO are ordinary features of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Almere; broodje pom, roti kip, bara, saoto and bami are sold as everyday Dutch takeaway; and Surinamese-Javanese food has become a recognised Dutch cuisine in its own right. ⚠ THAT IS A THIRD GENERATION OF DRIFT — Java to Suriname to the Netherlands — and it is recorded as its own thing, not as Indonesian food twice removed.
