Sorbian Foodways under the GDR

Historical period

Collectivisation ended the household farm that most of this food came from; lignite mining destroyed well over a hundred villages, many Sorbian, moving their people into new towns. The state funded Sorbian institutions and folklore while the economy dismantled the village life the food belonged to โ€” both are true and both are recorded.

What is recorded

  • Lignite mining in the GDR destroyed well over a hundred Lusatian villages, many of them Sorbian-speaking, and resettled their populations. State support for Sorbian culture and the destruction of the villages that carried it happened at the same time; both belong in the record. documented
