Diaspora
Mass emigration from the Carpathian villages between the 1880s and 1914, chiefly to the coal and steel districts of the north-eastern United States and to Canada, with later waves after both world wars and after 1989. Internal movement matters as much: to Vojvodina in the 1740s, to Bohemia and Moravia between the wars, and to the Czech Republic and western Europe for work today.
