Mate, Tereré and Chimarrão — a note

Comparison

⚠ A WARNING ROW. Yerba mate is Ilex paraguariensis, its use is GUARANÍ in origin, and the Jesuit missions industrialised its cultivation. Four national practices, all real and all different: PARAGUAY drinks TERERÉ — ICE COLD, with pohã ñana medicinal herbs crushed into the water — and it is national cultural heritage there; URUGUAY drinks it hot from a wide gourd with a thermos carried under the arm, and has the highest consumption per head in the world; ARGENTINA drinks it hot and grows most of the world supply; southern BRAZIL drinks CHIMARRÃO from a tall cuia. ⚠ THE PLANT IS PARAGUAYAN AND THE PRACTICE IS GUARANÍ; the national styles are not competing claims to it.
