Honduran Coffee

Café hondureño

Agricultural region

⚠ HONDURAS IS THE LARGEST COFFEE PRODUCER IN CENTRAL AMERICA and among the largest arabica exporters in the world, which is a recent position — the expansion is largely post-1990 and coffee is now the leading agricultural export. Six recognised growing regions: COPÁN, OPALACA, MONTECILLOS (which contains MARCALA, holder of Honduras’s denomination of origin), COMAYAGUA, EL PARAÍSO and AGALTA. Smallholder-dominated, shade-grown at altitude, wet-processed, with Lenca producers prominent in Montecillos and Opalaca. ⚠ AND THE SHOCKS ARE PART OF THE RECORD: COFFEE LEAF RUST (roya) caused a documented emergency across the 2012-14 harvests, and price collapses have repeatedly driven migration from the coffee districts.
