Grenadian Foodways

National

⚠ THE SPICE ISLAND, AND THE NUTMEG IS NOT MARKETING. Grenada produced a very large share of the world’s NUTMEG and MACE for most of the twentieth century — second only to Indonesia — and nutmeg is on the national flag. Also cinnamon, clove, ginger, turmeric, bay and pimento, and a serious fine-flavour COCOA industry. The national dish is OIL DOWN: breadfruit, salt meat, callaloo, dumplings and vegetables simmered in COCONUT MILK with turmeric until the liquid is entirely absorbed — the name describes the method. Plus fish, lambi, the Friday fish fry at Gouyave, and the chocolate and nutmeg sweets. ⚠ SIX PARISHES PLUS CARRIACOU AND PETITE MARTINIQUE, which are their own thing.
