Oistins and Barbadian Fishing

Specialised

OISTINS in Christ Church is the island’s fishing town, and the FISH FRY on Friday nights — vendors grilling and frying marlin, mahi, tuna, swordfish and flying fish with macaroni pie, rice and peas and breadfruit — is the weekly social event for Barbadians before it is a tourist attraction. Beyond it: the flying fish season, the ice houses, the fish markets at Bridgetown and Speightstown, sea eggs (white sea urchin roe) whose harvest is now tightly restricted after stock collapse, and the dolphin/mahi and kingfish fleet. ⚠ SEA EGGS ARE A CLOSED-SEASON FOOD and their scarcity is documented.
