⚠ A WARNING ROW. "Baltic" means three different things and they do not coincide. (1) The Baltic LANGUAGES: Lithuanian and Latvian, the only two surviving, with Latgalian and Samogitian as varieties. (2) The Baltic STATES: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia — where Estonian is FINNIC, a relative of Finnish and Võro, not a Baltic language. (3) The Baltic SEA region, which is larger than all of that. Livonian, now barely spoken, was also Finnic, on the Latvian coast.

What is recorded
Estonian is a FINNIC language, related to Finnish, Võro and Livonian — not a Baltic language. Lithuanian and Latvian are the only surviving Baltic languages. Estonia is a Baltic STATE. The three senses of "Baltic" — languages, states, and the sea region — do not coincide and are kept apart throughout this system.documented
