Buttermilk and milk as the everyday drinks; TEA in enormous quantity, and the chapel and pit-canteen tea urn; ALE, brewed domestically and then industrially at Wrexham โ whose lager brewery of 1882 was the first in Britain โ and Brains in Cardiff; CIDER and PERRY in the Monmouthshire and Gwent border country, continuous with Herefordshire; and a modern Welsh WHISKY and gin sector and a small vineyard sector. โ THE 19TH-CENTURY TEMPERANCE AND CHAPEL MOVEMENT is part of this story: much of Wales voted itself dry on Sundays and the last such areas only went wet in 1996.
