Famine, Emigration and Rationing

Historical period

The famine years of 1867-69 in the north; the emigration of roughly 1.3 million people between 1850 and 1930, over a fifth of the population, most to the United States; the poverty diet of herring, potatoes and porridge that drove it; and the rationing of both world wars, in which Sweden remained neutral but blockaded.
