Comparison
⚠ ONE DISTRICT IS MOST OF THE COUNTRY. SIPALIWINI covers the whole forested interior — the great majority of Suriname’s land — and holds very few people: Indigenous villages and Maroon communities along the rivers, reached by boat and small plane. Everyone else lives on the coastal strip: PARAMARIBO and Wanica (well over half the population), Nickerie with its rice, Commewijne and Saramacca with their plantation history, Para, Coronie with its coconuts, Marowijne on the French Guianese border, and Brokopondo around the reservoir. ⚠ THE INTERIOR AND THE COAST ARE DIFFERENT FOOD SYSTEMS and one is not a rural version of the other.
