Jewish Norwegian Foodways

Community

Jews were barred from Norway by the constitution of 1814 until the clause was repealed in 1851 after Henrik Wergelandโ€™s campaign; communities then formed in Oslo and Trondheim, the latter with the worldโ€™s northernmost synagogue. Around 770 Norwegian Jews were deported in 1942-43 and most were murdered; the community was rebuilt after the war. A distinct Ashkenazi tradition, recorded in relationship with Norwegian foodways.
