Luxembourgish — a note on the language

Linguistic

⚠ LËTZEBUERGESCH IS A LANGUAGE, official since 1984 alongside French and German, with its own orthography, dictionary, literature and broadcasting, and a required element of naturalisation. It is ALSO, in the dialect continuum, a MOSELLE FRANCONIAN variety closely related to speech across the German border — and both of those statements are true at once. This system uses the canonical lang:luxembourgish entity, preserves Luxembourgish food terms rather than translating them to German or French, and records the continuum question rather than pretending it is settled. Luxembourg also runs on three administrative languages at once and, with roughly half its residents foreign nationals and a very large cross-border workforce, Portuguese, Italian and English are everywhere in its food life.

What is recorded

  • Luxembourgish has been an official language of the Grand Duchy since 1984, with its own standardised orthography, lexicography and literature, and is also, within the dialect continuum, a Moselle Franconian variety closely related to speech across the German border. Both statements are recorded; the classification question is preserved rather than resolved, and Luxembourgish food terminology is not replaced by German or French. documented
