Ethnolinguistic
TRIESENBERG and PLANKEN were settled in the 13th and 14th centuries by WALSER โ German-speaking migrants from the Valais who moved along the high Alps and took land above the treeline that nobody else wanted, holding it on free tenure. Their speech, TRIESENBERGER, is a Highest Alemannic Walser variety and is markedly different from the Rhine-valley dialects below. The foodways are mountain foodways: Alpine dairying on the Alpen, cheese and butter made at the hut, dried and smoked meat, hard bread baked in batches, barley and rye, and hay meadows. โ WALSER IS NOT LIECHTENSTEINER AND LIECHTENSTEINER IS NOT WALSER โ this is one community within the country, connected to Walser settlements across Switzerland, Italy and Austria.
