Garifuna Foodways in Guatemala

Community

⚠ A SMALL COMMUNITY WITH ITS OWN STANDING, not a Honduran offshoot. The Guatemalan Garifuna are concentrated in LÍVINGSTON (Labuga) in Izabal, with Puerto Barrios and smaller settlements, having arrived along the coast from the 1797 dispersal and in a documented movement of the early nineteenth century. Garifuna is spoken alongside Spanish, English and Q’eqchi’. The foodway is the Garifuna one — EREBA from bitter cassava on the ruguma, HUDUT with fufu/machuca, TAPADO, DARASA, BUNDIGA, coconut rice, GUIFITI, PAN DE COCO — but ⚠ THE LÍVINGSTON TAPADO IS ITS OWN ARTICLE, more strongly associated with Guatemala than with Honduras, and Lívingston’s isolation and Q’eqchi’ neighbours have shaped a distinct local kitchen. 26 NOVEMBER is the Guatemalan Garifuna Day.
