Candomblé Foodways

Religious

In Candomblé, food is liturgy: each orixá has foods associated with it, prepared and offered according to rules, and the terreiro kitchen is a ritual space with its own hierarchy. Publicly documented and widely published: acarajé as a food of Iansã, the comida de santo tradition, caruru, amalá, the use of dendê, and the well-recorded relationship between the terreiro and the baiana de acarajé. ⚠ RESTRICTED, INITIATORY AND CEREMONIAL DETAIL IS NOT RECORDED HERE, and Candomblé foodways are not reduced to recipes. The religion faced criminalisation and still faces documented religious intolerance, which is part of this history.
