The Columbian Exchange in Brazil

Historical period

⚠ A DATING AND DIRECTION ROW. FROM BRAZIL AND THE AMERICAS: cassava, peanut, cashew, pineapple, guava, passion fruit, açaí, cacao, maize, capsicum, tomato, potato, squash, common bean. TO BRAZIL: rice, wheat, sugarcane, coffee, banana, mango, citrus, coconut, okra, black-eyed pea, yam, dendê palm, cattle, pigs, chickens. ⚠ NOTE THE AFRICAN COLUMN: dendê, okra, black-eyed peas, malagueta and some yams came from AFRICA with enslaved people, not from Portugal, and the Bahian kitchen is unintelligible without them. Coffee and sugarcane, the two crops that shaped Brazil most, are both introductions.
