Regional
Six districts and they differ by who lives in them. BELIZE DISTRICT — Belize City, Kriol-majority, the port; rice and beans, stew chicken, fry jack, conch, and the cayes offshore. COROZAL and ORANGE WALK in the north — Mestizo, Yucatec-descended, eating escabeche, relleno negro, salbutes, panades, garnaches and tamales, and growing the sugarcane. CAYO in the west — San Ignacio, Mestizo and Maya, and the MENNONITE colonies at Spanish Lookout and Blue Creek that supply much of the country’s dairy, poultry and produce. STANN CREEK — Dangriga and Hopkins, the GARIFUNA heartland, plus the citrus and banana belt. TOLEDO in the far south — Q’eqchi’ and Mopan Maya, the wettest and poorest district, and the cacao that supplies Belizean and export chocolate.
