Community

The nine municipalities of the East Cantons — EUPEN, Sankt Vith, Kelmis, Raeren, Lontzen, Amel, Büllingen, Bütgenbach and Burg-Reuland — ceded from Germany to Belgium in 1920, with their own parliament and government and German as their official language. ⚠ GERMAN-SPEAKING BELGIANS ARE BELGIANS, NOT GERMANS. The food is High Ardennes and Eifel: dairy and the Herve plateau cheeses nearby, pork and sausage, rye and spelt bread, Platz and Reisfladen, game, and a Belgian beer culture over a German baking one.
