Frisian Religious and Festival Food

Religious

A strongly Protestant region since the Reformation โ€” Reformed and, in places, Mennonite, the Doopsgezinden having deep Frisian roots โ€” which means few fast-day dishes and a great deal of communal coffee-table eating: after church, at funerals, at birthdays. Also Sinterklaas in December with speculaas and taai-taai; oliebollen at New Year; and the harvest and skating occasions.
