Kogi, Arhuaco, Wiwa and Kankuamo Foodways

Indigenous

The four peoples of the SIERRA NEVADA DE SANTA MARTA — KOGI (Kággaba), ARHUACO (Iku), WIWA and KANKUAMO — hold the world’s highest coastal mountain as a single sacred territory bounded by the Línea Negra, and describe themselves as its Elder Brothers. Their agriculture is vertical: families farm at several altitudes at once, so that maize, beans, plantain, yuca, malanga, potato, COCA (chewed, not processed — a distinction that matters) and coffee all come from the same household. The Arhuaco cooperative ANEI has exported organic coffee under Indigenous ownership. ⚠ THEIR RELIGIOUS AND ECOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE IS NOT RECORDED HERE, at their own consistent public request; the agriculture is.
